Learning to Calm Down

Students in kindergarten have been learning and practicing ways to calm down when having a "big feeling".  Often we think of those big feelings as anger but being really excited can call for the need to calm down, too.  Students have learned a song called "The Calm Down Song".  It is a fun way to remember the three things we practice in class to calm down:  1.) put your hand on your tummy and say "calm down", 2.) take a deep breath, and 3.) count out loud.

We have also explored different times and situations that cause one to have big feelings.  Through role plays and planning ahead students are better able to use these skills in real situations.

Recently we have been taking time to learn how to relax our bodies as well as our minds.  Ask your child about playing the Spaghetti Game.  They love it!  We will practice more progressive relaxation throughout the rest of the year.
