Bullying Unit

In first and second grade, we are finishing up our bullying unit.  We have had some great discussions about the difference between a normal conflict and bullying.  The main differences are:

Bullying happens in secret, the bully is not friends with the target and happens over time.  A normal conflict happens where everyone can see it, both people fight, it ends quickly, the problem is worked out & they are friends again.
Bullying ends up with one person feeling unsafe.

We also explored strategies on how to deal with bullying.  Many of the strategies are the same used in a normal conflict.

We also discussed the importance of being a helpful bystander.  Helpful bystanders are those who tell the bully to stop, encourage the target to leave, or tell an adult.

Sometimes it is hard for kids to know if the problem they are having with another student is a normal conflict or bullying.  The message we send is "If you feel unsafe tell an adult and we well help you work it out".

Students in Mrs. Marshall's class listen to the book Blue Cheese Breath and Stinky Feet, a book about dealing with a bully.

Students in first grade take a No Bullying Pledge
and think about how to stop bullying.
